The primary goal of childhood swim lessons is teaching the lifesaving skill of staying above water. While lessons also focus on enjoyment and physical health, safety always comes first. Children gradually develop skills, strength, and water confidence in a controlled environment.
Goggles allow children to see clearly underwater without adjusting their eyes, making them feel more comfortable. However, relying on goggles can prevent children from learning an important skill: opening their eyes underwater.
This skill may seem minor, but it’s crucial for safety. Children in Southern California are often exposed to water year-round. If they only experience swimming with goggles, an accidental fall without them could startle the child and reduce the effectiveness of their training in a real emergency.
At Premier Aquatics Services, instructors prioritize effective techniques that promote both safety and water confidence. Young swimmers are encouraged to learn to swim without goggles initially, building comfort and familiarity with underwater experiences.
Once a child demonstrates confidence underwater, instructors allow them to switch to goggles for additional comfort and visibility. This approach ensures safety while gradually increasing enjoyment in the water.
