CPR: Why You Need to Know Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
If an emergency occurs and someone needs immediate medical attention, the odds of survival are low without intervention. A Duke University study found that only 3.5% of people are properly trained in CPR each year.

What is CPR?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique used when a person has stopped breathing or their heartbeat has stopped, often due to drowning or a heart attack.

Why Every Minute Counts

Each minute that CPR is not administered decreases survival rates by 10%. Immediate action can make the difference between life and death.

Act, Even If You’re Untrained

The American Heart Association urges bystanders to act, even if they feel unconfident in their CPR skills. Hands-only CPR can save lives and is recommended for untrained rescuers:

  • Perform 100 chest compressions per minute on adults.
  • Ensure 911 has been called before beginning.

How to Perform Chest Compressions

  1. Lay the person on their back on a firm surface.
  2. Kneel next to their neck and shoulders.
  3. Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest, between the nipples; place the other hand on top.
  4. Keep elbows straight, shoulders above hands.
  5. Push down at least 2 inches, using your upper body weight.
  6. Continue until the person shows signs of improvement or trained medical personnel arrive.

Important Considerations

  • Chest compressions are only part of CPR. Formal training is required to add the breathing component.
  • CPR differs for children and newborns—seek proper training if you care for them.

Take Action Today

Don’t be part of the 96.5% of people unprepared for emergencies. Register for a CPR/AED and First Aid class to gain the skills and confidence to save a life. Classes are offered monthly—check our online calendar to find one that fits your schedule.
