How To Avoid Sunstroke and Sunburns
While other parts of the country face freezing temperatures and snowstorms, Southern California continues to enjoy clear skies and warm weather. With spring approaching and temperatures rising, you’ll soon be relaxing by the beach or pool. As you enjoy the sun, it’s essential to protect yourself and your family from sunburns and sunstroke.

Apply Sunscreen Properly

Most people do not apply enough sunscreen or fail to reapply it frequently. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Apply sunscreen before going outdoors.
  • Reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.
  • Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays.
  • Use an SPF of at least 15, and a higher SPF if you have sensitive skin.
  • Check the expiration date—expired sunscreen loses effectiveness.

Cover Up With Protective Clothing

If you’ll be in the sun for an extended period:

  • Wear a hat to protect your face.
  • Use sunglasses to shield your eyes from UV damage.
  • Choose lightweight, light-colored clothing to reflect sunlight.
  • Bring a body-sized umbrella for shade at the beach or pool.

Limit Strenuous Activity During Peak Heat

Avoid vigorous activity in the middle of the day, when temperatures are highest. Instead, schedule workouts or outdoor activities for early morning or evening. Regardless of the time of day, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Know When to Seek Shade

If you start feeling dizzy, overheated, or notice signs of sunburn, move to a shaded area immediately and increase your fluid intake. Acting quickly can prevent more serious heat-related illnesses.
