Preparing Your Family with an Emergency Preparedness Kit
Emergencies can happen without warning, and every family should have a plan to respond quickly and effectively. A crucial component of any family’s emergency strategy is a preparedness kit—a collection of supplies that can sustain you and your loved ones when disaster strikes.

What Is an Emergency Preparedness Kit?

An emergency preparedness kit, also known as a disaster supply kit, contains the essential items you may need during unexpected situations such as earthquakes, fires, tsunamis, or power outages. In a true disaster, it could take days for relief efforts to reach you, making self-sufficiency critical.

Basic Supplies for Your Kit

According to Ready.gov, a basic emergency kit should provide enough food, water, and necessities for at least three days:

  • Water: One gallon per person per day
  • Food: Three-day supply of non-perishable items
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio, and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask for contaminated air
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape for temporary shelter
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties for sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Manual can opener
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers, inverter, or solar charger

Additional Supplies to Consider

Each family is unique, and your kit should include items specific to your household’s needs:

  • Medications (7-day supply)
  • Extra prescription glasses or contact lenses
  • Baby diapers and formula
  • Denture needs
  • Pet food and water
  • Cash (small bills)
  • Important family documents in a waterproof container
  • Sleeping bags or blankets
  • Change of clothing and comfortable shoes
  • Feminine hygiene products
