The Benefits Of Having An AED In The Workplace
We’ve all seen dramatic hospital scenes where a doctor shocks a patient’s heart back into rhythm. But what happens when someone experiences sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital setting? According to OSHA, 890 deaths from coronary heart disease occur outside of hospitals each day, many of which could be prevented with timely access to an AED.

What is an AED?

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that can check a victim’s heart rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electric shock to restore a normal heartbeat. It’s a lifesaving tool designed for quick action in emergencies.

How AEDs Work

AEDs use adhesive electrodes to monitor the heart rate and a built-in computer to determine if defibrillation is needed. The device guides the rescuer with voice prompts, instructing when to deliver a shock or providing real-time CPR feedback if defibrillation isn’t required.

Why AEDs Are Critical

Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S., with over 350,000 cases annually. Survival decreases by 8–10% for every minute without treatment. Since first responders often take 8–10 minutes to arrive, having an AED nearby can make the difference between life and death.

Who Can Use an AED?

AEDs are designed for use by almost any adult, including non-medical personnel such as police officers, firefighters, lifeguards, and athletic trainers. The Red Cross recommends that every American should be within four minutes of an AED and someone trained to use it.
